Go Deluxe with Archirivolto for Muranodue
For those lucky enough to be in the know, Muranodue signifies a venerated tradition of exquisitely crafted, methodically-cooled glass. The brand definitely has a certain cache. So whether the product takes shape as the beautifully trembling assemblage of the Ether Chandelier; or the intricately interconnected facet panels of today’s Deluxe, be assured it’s the stuff of a contemporary classic.

Deluxe represents an auspicious synthesis of several different forces (mostly of Italian origin—and you can’t go wrong with that). This potent grouping begins with design studio Archirivolto and principals Claudio Dondoli and Marco Pocci, who parlayed their early forays as an experimental theater group into a collaborative studio aiming for “beauty, harmony, and freedom,” not to mention championing increased access for all, believing that good design should not be the province of a privileged few. I’m certainly sympathetic to that perspective, though I’m not sure how it squares with Muranodue product—which is, quite often, geared towards a certain minimal affluence.
Perhaps the answer lies in the intervention of FDV, a new lighting brand that represents four distinguished Italian lighting manufactures, and in so doing makes the product more accessible (at least in some ways) to the global marketplace.
That said, the price tag of Deluxe doesn’t exactly scream “high accessibility”: cost ranges from $1,496 for the large Deluxe 50s pendant (19.6” diameter), down to $688 for the Deluxe 35p wall light (13.6” diameter). But one can hardly fault Muranodue—a light like Deluxe, that achieves such aesthetic flourish, tactile appeal, and intriguing manipulations of light and shadow, is hardly easy to create; they certainly can’t be expected to just give it away. And neither should you, should you have the means to acquire one, because Deluxe is a living heirloom: like the storied craftsmanship of Murano glass, the Deluxe suspension and wall lamps will surely stave off the whims of time, the fickleness of fashion.
