Layered Wood Bench by Fumie Shibata for Sakai Sangyo
Presented last year during Tokyo Designers Week at an exhibition called ‘Any Tokyo‘, 'Layered Wood’ is a new furniture project designed by Fumie Shibata for Nagano-based company Sakai Sangyo.
The Layered Bench pairs an iron base with high-quality laminated wood seat.
Celebrating the beauty of domestic laminated wood, the Layered Bench makes a decorative feature out of the wood’s rings that are exposed in the cross-section.
Nagano Prefecture Larch accounts for over 50% of the materials used in the bench. Laminated lumber is typically perceived as less valuable than pure lumber but the Layered Wood bench is designed to elevate the material through contemporary design, drawing out its beauty and charm.
