Swizzle Sticks: Cascades of Color by Andarina Designs

When designer Stacy Harshman came upon a set of antique swizzle sticks, she became enamored with the idea of translating them into grander pieces. After taking some classes at a local glass studio, Harshman was ready to start her company Andarina Designs and debut her lighting pieces, which incorporate glass rods—her updated, larger version of the swizzle stick. These pendant and table lamps, known as Cascades of Color, are handmade wonders with a unique design inspiration.

Cascades of Color lamps come in “gorgeous palettes of jewel tones and creamy pastels.” Made by hanging glass rods from perforated metal shades, the pendant lamps hang approximately 16 inches and are available in five versions, depending on the size of the metal shade. Cascades of Color Table Lamps measure 10 inches square or 10 inches in diameter; both come with an 11 inch wood base.

Andarina Designs calls Cascades of Color pendant and table lamps a combination of elegant and industrial—and this seems an apt characterization. The elongated forms of the glass rods remind me of electron guns from old television cathode ray tubes, but they also resemble the flowing strands of flapper dresses.

About the Manufacturer: Andarina Designs produces lamps using glass rods, metal, and plexi. Designer Stacy Harshman had an idea when she “came across a set of antique glass swizzle sticks and became enchanted by the beams of color they threw when held up to light.” With that idea in mind, she began taking classes at a Brooklyn glass studio, where she learned to create her own swizzle sticks. These glass rods form the basis of her Cascades of Color and Cubes of Color lamps, as well as Harshman’s custom lighting.
