Mars & Venus Chaises

Lets face it, you don't need to be a sociologist to pick out the cognitive differences between the two sexes. The expression battle of the sexes may sound trite in the 21st century, however the fight for supremacy between men and women is rarely superficial! Men are indeed from Mars and Women from Venus, and even author John Gray was smart enough to write a book about it (and make a couple of million dollars in the process).

Mars & Venus Chaises. Designed by Madhi Naim.

French Industrial Designer, Madhi Naim pays homage to these two dynamic opposites by designing the Mars & Venus Chaises. It doesn't matter if you are a "Martian" or a  “Venusian", since the chair seems to symbolize two primordial opposing but complementary entities, which as you know by now are men and women.

When I first saw these chairs, I wondered if they were highlighting gender differences or or if they stressed the interdependence between the two? While the message is surely open to interpretation, one cannot deny that Naim has incorporated the traditional gender symbols for men and women into his creation quite cleverly. It's evident that the designer was veering towards the quirky as the non-cacophonous and modern-esque lines seem to keep pace with the current thriving design scene.

Eclecticism and commenting on human behavior seems to be the order of the day in the design continuum and the Mars & Venus Chaises are no different. Madhi Naim's eventual presentation rises above the banal and also quite facetiously questions the long overdrawn battle of the sexes. You can check out Naim's website "The Close Galerie" here but be warned that there is no English option (some things never change, do they?). However jokes apart, Niam has an impressive repertoire, which reflects an informed and global perspective.
