Amechi displays its five jacquard-woven throw blankets inspired by Ghanaian heritage and the beauty of Asafo flags, the regimental flags of the Fante poeple of Ghana. At London Design Festival 2024, Amechi brings African design “into the contemporary home” so everyone can “cozy up with a piece of Ghanaian heritage.”

The Asafo Collection includes five colorful throw blankets, each based on a folk tale. Discover the stories these blankets have to tell.

Asaf O’donis

Asaf O’donis tells the tale of twin brothers Ata Kakra the Valiant and Ata Panyin the Wise. Featuring a light blue background with a red and white border, this throw blanket captures the interconnections of land, sea, and air. Amechi puts it beautifully: :Soaring high above, a metal bird messenger streaks across the sky, its candy-coloured propellers a beacon of victory. Even the mighty blue whale breaches in salute, its mighty form intimidating a pair of jubilant red crabs.”

Chief Palaver 

With an enchanting color combination, the Chief Palaver throw blanket illustrates the story of two Fante chiefs, “each blaming the other for a missing sacred drum.” Spoiler alert: a mischievous monkey took it.

Good Morning

My favorite of the Asafo Collection, the Good Morning throw blanket features a dynamic composition with a husband and wife at the forefront, dwarfed by an ostrich who “parades with a colossal guava in its beak.” But the cattle egrets circling above have designs on the fruit.

Bright orange with a red and pink border and aqua and white birds, the Good Morning blanket sets the mood of the day. Have a cup of coffee and a sweet orange.

Heavy Catch

It’s time for celebrating: “Bakatue festival fever has gripped the village!” Fishermen battle to catch the biggest fish possible without capsizing their boat. The Heavy Catch throw blanket offers a playful scene with vibrant colors and a wave-like border. It’s perfect for sofas or as a wall-hanging.

Asafo Park

Amechi describes the Asafo Park throw blanket: “A symphony of sun-baked grass and the gentle murmur of the breeze.” Asafo Park throw blanket includes an interesting set of characters. Kwasi the snake, Kogi the eagle, Kwabena the man, and Efua the great blue turaco, who are all “bickering forever captured in a whimsical dance.”
