Therefore, it’s no surprise that condo conversions and restoration projects are becoming increasingly popular. Dan Shannon, from Moed de Armas & Shannon and Malay Shah, from Handel Architects will speak about both 150 East 72nd Street and 737 Park Avenue.
Dan is a nationally-recognized leader in commercial design for new and redeveloped buildings and principal at MdeAS. With over three decades of experience, he provides creative, innovative architectural solutions; making him instrumental in the firm’s overall approach to design. His clear commitment to the philosophy of modernism and urbanism enlivens a building’s presence with integrity. Dan’s effective leadership and project management transcends the firm with a reputation for meeting the client’s goals by working closely with them through the design process. Setting a high-standard for craft within architecture, Dan’s eye for detail is reflected in every project he manages. He has worked alongside international developers to oversee the construction of more than 15 million square feet, including the renovation of the GM Building, winner of a 2007 MASterworks Award, and the redevelopment of 100 Park Avenue, recognized in 2009 as BOMA’s International Renovated Building of the Year. Most recently, “The Cubes,” at 120 West 42nd Street won the AIA’s Award of Excellence of Commercial Large Projects and received the Outstanding Project Award from the GNYCUC.
Malay Shah is an Associate Principal, having joined Handel Architects in 2000. He has managed projects in New York, Washington, Raleigh, Boston and India, including residential, hospitality, and mixed-use work. Recent work includes serving as Project Designer for a new 6.5 million sq. ft. mixed-use project in Dubai, called Aykon City, for developer DAMAC. The project, now under construction, includes 960 residential units, 1,750 serviced apartments, a 60-key hotel, and 900,000 sq. ft. of office space. Mr. Shah also served as Project Designer for the 2.25 million sq. ft. mixed-use Shangri-La Hotel & Residences in Manila, Philippines, which opened in 2016. Previously, Mr. Shah served as Project Designer for 3303 Water Street, a 240,000 sq. ft. residential building in the historic Georgetown area of Washington, DC. He also served as Project Architect for the exterior skin design and development of West Jones Street, a 290,000 sq.ft. mixed-use project in Raleigh, North Carolina. Before joining Handel Architects, Mr. Shah was Project Architect at Sen Architects and at Vijay Kale Architects, both in New York City. Mr. Shah has also worked as a Project Architect and Designer at several firms in India and Bhutan, where he completed a variety of projects for public and private clients.
