As an artist, Arik Levy likely subscribes to the notion that the process, rather than the "thing," or object produced, is the "thing" itself. Levy's familiar missive, "What counts in the world is people, not tables or chairs,” gives an additional dimension to this notion.

His design work is as fluid and dynamic as his career. Born in Israel, Levy cut his artistic teeth as a sculptor, participating in a group sculpture exhibit in Tel Aviv in 1988. This early work set the stage for his Rock Series-a collection of pieces in bronze, steel, and wood that reinterpret nature into simplified yet stunning geometric incarnations.

His early training in sculpture evolved into stints in graphic design, set creation (for contemporary dance and opera), industrial design, fashion, and fashion accessories.

This evolution of his professional trajectory was fundamental, the differentiated talents establishing him as an accomplished technician and innovative artistic thinker.

Levy's furniture designs manifest this synthesis of precision and creativity.

5. Structure for Inbani

Nothing is extraneous yet all is inspired. His tables, chairs, lounges, and bathroom fittings tend to embody lightness and exactitude, but they are exuberant and surprising too. He seems to relish playing games with geometry-or inventing new geometries outright, as in the appropriately named Twister Table.

6. Twister Table for Desalto

Additionally, much of his work manages to unify movement and stasis, this compulsion for dynamism perhaps influenced by his lifetime love of surfing, of the oft-paradoxical combination of motion and stillness integral to that discipline.

7. Xl1 for Ligne Roset

His furniture also evokes a certain sense of prestidigitation, designs that somehow seem to have evolved from the process of folding a two-dimensional surface into a lively and enigmatic three-dimensional reality, very like the ancient art of Origami.

8. A1 Chair for Desalto

Levy has created art and design in various venues and multiple countries, his working life transcending time, continents, and countries-from Israel to Japan, Switzerland to Paris.

9. Milix for Bernhardt

His work has been exhibited in museums, exhibitions, festivals, and galleries all over the world, including the London Design Fair; the Please Do Not Enter gallery in L.A.; the Mus©e des Arts D©coratifs in Paris; the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria; and Jerusalem's Israel Museum.

10. Dependance Glass Sculpture

He has permanent displays at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and New York's Museum of Modern Art.
