Great Globes: Lighting Trend

The past year has given rise to a fresh crop of globe-shaped lighting to add to our already extensive list of favorites, detailed here and here. This year’s selection have a retro appeal with designs that nod to the early 20th century, design classics from the 1950s and even an ’80s-inspired table lamp.     

Globe lamp by Kate Spade Saturday for West Elm_2

Furniture and homeware giant West Elm collaborated with Kate Spade Saturday to produce the ‘Globe’ table lamp – a two-orbed design that’s reminiscent of the early 20th century lampposts found at New York City’s subway entrances.

Gino Sarfatti at Galerie Kreo_1

Showcased at Galerie Kreo’s London outpost this month, the ‘237/2’ sconce (shown above) and the ‘Plafonnier modèle n°2042/9’ (shown top) by Gino Sarfatti are part of the gallery’s archive of Gino Sarfatti lights - the largest collection in the world. The soft, spherical designs harnessed together by lacquered-iron rings were produced by Sarfatti for Arteluce in the 1950s.

Swedish designer Stefan Borselius’ ‘Halo’ street lamp for Atelj© Lyktan is designed for use outdoors. Warm-colored LEDs are housed in an opaque acrylic plastic diffuser with an aluminum-rimmed opening at the base. The LEDs inside are protected by a cover of hardened glass that sits across the opening.  An aluminum cap at the top of the shade connects to a tubular fixing that can be attached to a pole, line or other street furniture.

Little Darling by Swedish Ninja

Made with green marble bases, pink steel frames, and glass globe diffusers the ‘Little Darling’ table and floor lamps by Maria Gustavsson of design studio Swedish Ninja are finished with intricate perforated leather details.

Half Moon by Allied Maker

New York studio Allied Maker’s 20″ ‘Half Moon’ lamp is handcrafted from premium grade brass. The lamp’s dome is brushed and waxed to a perfect sheen while the 18″ diameter blown glass globe provides subtle surface diffusion. The Half Moon is finished with a matching metal canopy and premium-grade wooden dowel, turned on a lathe and finished with natural oils. The dowel is custom made in a variety of exotic woods and provides simple structural support for the A-frame.
