Brass Beauties: Lighting Trend
Popular for its strength, warm color and reflective properties, brass is the perfect material choice for lamp design. In recent years, designers have used brass to create contemporary statement lamps with bold geometric forms.
Designed by Philippe Malouin for Roll & Hill the impressive 38″ x 38″ Gridlock lamp is an inverted pyramid of solid brass inspired by architectural cross bracing – a system used to reinforce structures.
Three perpendicular bands, made in solid brushed brass and embedded with LEDs, are fused together by brushed brass rings set at each of the six intersections to create KAIA’s ‘Ona’ lamp.
New for 2014, Tom Dixon’s ‘Plane’ lamps are characterised by their simplicity and bold geometry: basic silhouettes made from a brass plated steel frame and a double layered white glass sphere.
A sculpted neon tube set in a brushed brass base, the ‘Light Line‘ is a cold cathode table lamp designed by Mary Wallis for Lindsey Adelman Studio.
The wooden base of Allied Maker‘s ‘Dome’ table lamp is crafted from premium-grade American Black Walnut, finished to a perfect sheen to expose its unique grain patterns. The shade is hand-spun from brass (also available in steel, blackened steel and blackened brass) which attaches to a hand-blown glass ball that diffuses the light. The fixture is finished with a herringbone woven cotton cord.
