When was the last time you spent a meaningful moment with felt? Felt takes me back to kindergarten art projects with a variety of felt circles in crazy colors that we would glue onto construction paper. In design we see felt in a random assortment of products from lamps to tables, which take advantage of the unusual properties of the material.

Graduate designer Charlotte Kingsnorth has designed a chair made from a single sheet of folded felt. Taking a cue from the mold-able stiffness of felt, Felt Up almost hugs the user in its felty folds. The chair is made of 16mm thick industrial felt which rests on a steel frame. Made from 100% natural wool, the felt not only creates a welcome surface for relaxing, but also provides a natural sound barrier for a peaceful relaxation experience. Kingsnorth’s design was exhibited at New Designers in London 2009.

Charlotte Kingsnorth explains, “Cut and folded in two places, a flat piece of felt has created a new space. When sat upon it cocoons the occupier, lulling them into a state of relaxation.”

About the Designer: Charlotte Kingsnorth’s design have been featured on many design sites due to her creative and innovative designs. Her award winning “At One” chair was designed while she was studying at Bucks New University in the UK. The chair was awarded a yellow pencil in the D&AD Student Awards 2008 for an early model, which was produced in response to the brief to design a sofa for the Vitra Editions range.
