Light and Sound: Hood by Form Us With Love and ateljé Lyktan
The word hood reminds me of my favorite fairy tale. You know the one: it involves a girl in red skipping through the woods who comes upon a no-good wolf. The allure of her crimson cape (besides its color) lies in its dual nature—that it both hides and protects her. Swedish design firm Form Us With Love has created Hood, a new light for ateljé Lyktan (the 77-year-old lighting manufacturer), which also celebrates duality: “Designed to be both a light source and a sound barrier, Hood forms a halo over the table, catching loose sentences in its thick felt.” Part umbrella, part steel drum, and part sea anemone, Hood seems to float above the surfaces it lights—looking as much aquatic as celestial: it resembles an undulating jellyfish suspended in the ocean and a dark moon orbiting a faraway galaxy.

Sound-Absorbing Felt Pendant Lamp
Besides its signature look, Hood has other perks. The hanging lamp is actually modular “with the possibility of growing however big it needs to be.” I’d like to know just how big that is—can Hood grow large enough to light an entire circus tent? No matter how large the scale, Hood’s panels are assembled on site, making Hood a flat-pack product. Hood may get its charm from the alliance between Form Us With Love and ateljé Lyktan—two heads are better than one, as they say. The two companies began working together in 2009, when they created the LED light Ogle, “which combines the function of a spotlight with the elegance of a pendant lamp.” This newest creation, however, has spawned a new chapter of collaboration: “Hood is a part of a new venture at ateljé Lyktan called Ateljén and here a team of designers and craftsmen are available to develop lighting solutions for the contract market.”
