Live at #IIDEX09: MADE’s Knot by Yvonne Ip
Pressed wool felt strips create loose and outstretched arms, something like the tentacles of a sea anemone. No, it’s not your traditional sofa. Knot is “a sitting object…a prototype of a versatile design concept that may take as many forms as there are knots.” Inspired by the elegance of knots (in all their various forms), designer Yvonne Ip describes them as self-sustaining objects, whose material and structure are integral.
Knot. Designed by Yvonne Ip for MADE.
“The Knot seat diverts the essence of a knot. Knots are tensile systems,” Ip explains, “whereas Knot functions in compression becoming a practical object through a corruption of scale.” Given the plethora of knot typologies people have learned (and mastered) in Boy Scouts, you may wonder why Ip settled on (or chose) the basic overhand knot. The answer: for its iconic status.
Check out Knot at the MADE booth at #IIDEX09. Chances are, it will be repeatedly reconfigured throughout the day – due to use and play . Or so we hope. And while you’re there (either in person or digital space), also have a look at Shadow Box by Connie Chisholm Studio and Barr Gilmore’s Shinny.
