Piero Lissoni for Alessi: From Trash Cans to Toilet Brushes

Finding a designer toilet brush has never been easier. All kidding aside, big name designers have been making their foray into everyday essentials. Michael Graves designed affordable option for Target (a toilet brush among other objects) and Philippe Starck has done his share of everyday objects (including the Excalibur Toilet brush manufactured by Heller). Finally, Piero Lissoni‘s take on everyday objects will be available via Alessi. Debuted at Maison et Objet 2010 is Alessi‘s typologically complete, thematic collection of small objects for the bathroom.

Bathroom Collection. Designed by Piero Lissoni for Alessi.

Designed by Piero Lissoni, the collection includes a sleek wastebasket, a soap dish, cotton swab holder, towel stand, and of course a toilet brush. The sleek bathroom wastebasket is made of a scrubbable plastic with a hinged lid that politely hides refuse. For practicality purposes (cleanliness and ease of use), a ringed anchor holds a removable plastic bag in place – and out of sight. All objects are simple, suave, and easy-to-clean.

Architect and designer Piero Lissonis served as Art Director and Designer at Boffi prior to founding Lissoni Associati with Nicoletta Canesi in 1986. He’s designed for companies including Cappellini, Cassina, Kartell and Poltrona Frau, has realized a range of successful industrial and graphic design projects including lighting and packaging, and also completed several interior design projects for private residences as well as luxury hotels, showrooms and resorts. In an interview with Wallpaper* in 2007, Lissoni described his bathroom as “clean and white”, some Boffi – some other brands. “If I was to redesign it I’d probably leave it like it is, except maybe I’d add a steam bath and some nice girls.”

Last year, Lissoni and Alessi collaborated on Barbicù, “An object dedicated to rustic cooks, explorers of taste, world-travelling gourmets, bucolic sophisticates and lovers of life in the open air. More of a travelling-case than a domestic utensil.”
