This month, Vitra will release the limited edition Polder Sofa by Dutch industrial designer Hella Jongerius to the US market. There are just 100 of the limited edition designs in the world and  9 of those will be available exclusively at the The Vitra Store in New York City.

Nine limited edition Polder sofas by Hella Jongerius will be on view at the Vitra Store in new York City until May 4th.

The Polder sofa was originally designed in 2005 and was Jongerius's first industrially designed piece of furniture. Vitra debuted  this limited edition version in April last year at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The name Polder actually refers to the low-lying tracts of land enclosed by embankments that are found in Jongerius’ home country of the Netherlands. The patchwork effect of the polder landscape is reflected in the sofa’s elongated horizontal lines, low-lying form, and asymmetry.

Each section of the sofa is distinguished by a unique fabric and proportion, resulting in an abstract composition "¨of color, pattern, and texture. The large, decorative buttons are made of materials like bone and mother-of-pearl and are secured using cross-stitched high-tech threads for visual punctuation.

For this special limited edition, Jongerius selected six Maharam textiles, including her embroidered Layers and Borders, which she designed for Maharam over the course of their decade-long collaboration. The Maharam Polder also features Exaggerated Plaid by "¨Paul Smith, the British fashion designer's modern take on Scottish tradition, as well as mohair velvet and two scales of checked wool. A custom Bovist stool and belted Queen's cushion - originally designed for a Polder commissioned by the Netherlands's Queen Beatrix-complete the presentation.
