Layers Encourage Learning: Strates by Mathieu Lehanneur for Objekten
Every year I vow to keep my desk neat, clean, and streamlined. I have tried various methods for doing this, which mostly involve trying out new desks. Two years ago I decided that small was the answer, and I purchased the smallest, narrowest desk I could find—no drawers, no files, very little surface area. Last year I went the opposite route, buying one of the largest desks I had ever laid eyes on—its expanse so large one might land an airplane on it. Needless to say, neither desk changed my level of tidiness. I am always seeking more surface space for spreading out books, papers, files, and plans. With the Strates Collection designed by Mathieu Lehanneur for Objekten, I may finally have found my sacred space.

Individual or Collective Desking and Storage
The Strates Collection includes the Strates Desk and Satellite Storage, both of which use interlocking pieces to create large and small spaces—all of which feature as many layers as sedimentary rock. Available in oak or white, Strates Desk and Satellite Storage look sleek and unique, every level its own autonomous surface. Objekten calls the pieces “highly innovative with convenient ergonomics”—and I can’t disagree. The concept is revolutionary, because it offers multiple desk surfaces. Designer Lehanneur went vertical instead of horizontal. Strates may represent a pivotal moment in office design, the desking parallel to the birth of the skyscraper.
The Strates Collection works in both individual and collaborative settings. The modular nature of the system gives it the ability to grow larger and larger. This makes Strates Desk and Satellite Storage perfectly suited for office environments where pairs and small groups gather to work together. Another option is to use the Stratum pieces in educational settings. The desking units respond to the way students learn today by encouraging group work. Its shape allows schools to create pods—a great alternative to the staid rows of yesteryear.
