Designer Andrew Jones got his inspiration for the Moss seating system while he enjoyed himself at a party. Watching how guests sat in varied positions—poised on the arms of couches and reclined on sofa cushions—Jones realized that people like to sit everywhere. This spirit of elan, of “interaction and intensity,” translates into new lounge seating that Jones describes as “a highly adaptable system which has deceptively simple parts.”

Comfortable Contract Seating Inspired by Partygoers

Manufactured by Keilhauer, Moss contains six pieces: seating in three heights, each available in two lengths. All of the modules present places for people to recline, lean, and rest. The three heights—based on the typical heights of traditional couch seats, arms, and backs—invite all types of users to sit. Moss offers no prescription for correct sitting; it merely suggests possibilities.

The Moss components join together via an aluminum extrusion that runs beneath and around the pieces; these get fastened together with a special plastic clip that “links the elements securely together.” The seating system lets designers and architects create a “landscape of seating opportunities,” turning spaces into symmetrical layouts or sculptural playgrounds.
