Whoaaa! Velicho Velikov‘s Lovely Chair is making me dizzy. While fair conjecture might attribute this upset equilibrium to the familiar emotional swells of the forthcoming Valentine’s Day (an event very in tune with Lovely’s lovely look), a more likely explanation is that I can’t see where it begins and where it ends. The swirly, colorful, and whimsical piece by the author of last summer’s Cubba Bubba (whose gravitational contortions upset my equilibrium in its own right), is a curvaceous celebration of swoop and swirl, of the organic O and the circuitous C.

Constructed of steel upholstered in fabric, the materials palette for Lovely is as subtle as a great big red ribbon atop a box of Godiva chocolates. But then, subtlety doesn’t seem to be Velikov’s strong suit, but in-your-face unorthodoxy and the grand-gesture suit him well, especially on the cusp of another February 14th., when, the culture police have it, everyone needs to get all mushy about their feelings.

Lovely is, indeed, one hundred kinds of mushy. And it comes in nearly one hundred different incarnations to boot. The original Lovely is comprised of mirrored lengths of twisted steel covered in red upholstery and forged in the shape of a pair of voluminous enveloping arms. Later incarnations include the pretzel-esque bar stool, a piece with a sexier silhouette than the original, even if its longish legs remind me of Twiggy, the pencil-thin 60s phenom referred to by some as “the world’s first supermodel.”

Lovely would seem to have no such aspirations. I believe it’s content to revel in its own kitschy glory, and, once a year, remind us how much fun it can be to wear our big red hearts on our collective sleeves.
