Architects Jaume Bach and Anna & Eugeni Bach of BACH Arquitectes recently completed a restoration and extension of Casa Alesan, one of the most well-known Decorative Arts buildings on Sant Joan Boulevard in Barcelona.

The Casa Alesan project converted the building from 8 to 18 apartments with the goal to “preserve the character of the property and restore all the decorative elements that make it so special without distorting the original spaces,” explains BACH Arquitectes.

Casa Alesan’s facade features beautiful stone sculpture, metalwork, and stained glass. The building seems to undulate, thanks to its elaborate bay windows, balconies, and arches. Decorative ornamentation embellishes the stucco, and metal railings emphasize the building’s sinuosity.

In order to extend the property without disturbing Casa Alesan’s original style, BACH Arquitectes added two top floors: “Regarding the extensionof the property, with two apartments in its upper part, the solution involves creating a new volume with a certain level of abstraction that, in the solution of the details, appears slightly separated from the original building.”
