Arpita Singh’s Remembering at Serpentine North
Serpentine North, an art gallery located in London, is currently in the installation process for a new exhibit coming soon: Remembering by Arpita Singh.

Remembering is the first institutional solo exhibition of Singh’s work in her career that spans sixty years.

Singh was born in 1937 in Baranagar, Bengal Presidency (now West Bengal). After graduating in Fine Arts from Delhi Polytechnic in 1959, Singh teamed up with fellow artists Nilima Sheikh, Nalini Malani, and Madhvi Parekh. In a largely male-dominated art world, these women supported one another and repeatedly exhibited their works together.

Today Singh lives and works in New Delhi, India.

This exhibit explores the full breadth of her practice, with pieces ranging from large-scale oil paintings to intimate watercolors and ink drawings.

“Remembering draws from old memories from which these works emerged. Whether I am aware or not, there is something happening at my core. It is how my life flows. Serpentine is a known and well-established gallery. To have a solo show there is a pleasure, honour, and surprise to me,” Singh said.

Singh’s art and paintings fuse Surrealism and figuration with Indian court painting narratives. They also bring together folk painting, weaving techniques, Indian mythology, city maps, and newspaper headlines.

Included is Singh’s 1990 oil on canvas Devi Pistol Wali (seen below) which is one of her earlier depictions of women in outdoor spaces and a visual representation of women multitasking.

Singh resists singular interpretation, explaining, “I know that when the work grows the starting point melts, references become signals to lead anybody or everybody to the desired place. I don’t remember myself, the frame breaks and I, the woman, stand there as anybody, as everybody.”

Remembering will open at Serpentine North in London on March 20, 2025. The exhibition will be on display through July 27, 2025.
