Toward Collection by Hightower
Danish design and American craftsmanship come together in the new Toward Collection. Designed by Danish architect Anne Boysen and the Hightower Studio design team, Toward seating includes two standalone sofa variations and a modular system with 17 unique modules and three tables. Inspired by mountain landscapes, Toward features different shapes and heights in a sleek, lean, organic silhouette. It’s contract furniture, so it’s meant to last—and it looks so good it could cross over into residential use.
Smart details include movable armrests that help to delineate personal space in public areas. Or remove the armrests to collaborate with others sharing the sofa. And Toward is designed for comfort with an inviting back pitch, tufted seat cushion, and accommodating seat height and depth.
Toward started as a student project for Boysen: “My vision when first designing Toward in graduate school was about looking toward the future. Ten years ago I was considering how the next big thing would be flexibility. And now that’s still the main focus for the future. The way we work today and how we live life outside of work is not as separate as it was before.”
In fact, for many people work and home don’t have separate spaces. This means contract furniture should work anywhere—which is exactly what Toward does.
Another detail to love is that Toward can work as a space or room divider. Boysen notes, “What I find very interesting is that Toward is beautiful from any angle, including when you see it from behind. So you can place it in the middle of the room, which is not something that can be done with many sofas.” Personally, I love it when furniture looks good from behind, as it makes arrangement and rearrangement possible. It also means Toward will work no matter where you take it—from open lofts to small rooms, waiting areas to hallways.
I admit I do a lot on my couch, including dining, working, and napping. Toward sofa is up for virtually any activity. And it looks great whether you’re reading Proust or productivity reports. The soft curves and wood legs bring a sense of organic ease, while the tufted seat adds a pop of tailored elegance.
Boysen also contributed to Toward’s palette, which ranges from millennial pink to jungle green. I can’t resist the circular Toward module in light pink, which is as sweet as a master baker’s confection.
