Watercolour Collection by Nendo
Recently shown at Design Miami 2018, the Watercolour Collection by Nendo explores the effects of watercolour painting.
Created for Friedman Benda, the Watercolour Collection includes 18 pieces of metal furniture. The simple metal furniture looks as if it “were cut and folded by hand.” The construction belies the material, making something hard appear soft and pliable.
Hand-painted with “beautiful colour bleeds,” the seating and tables by Nendo capture the beauty of ethereal pigments. The technique involved multiple layers of sanding and painting with primer and matte white paint before hand-painting “with a mix of two tones of aqueous inks.”
The Watercolour Collection is finished with a protective clear matter layer that emphasizes the paper-like texture.
The seating pieces unfold like origami. Paper-thin surfaces seem almost impossible to sit upon—it is all lightness.
