Reclaimed, Salvaged, and Illuminated: Urban Chandy by Cassidy Brush

The advent of CFL and LED bulbs is changing the way we see light, but lots of admirers of the old-fashioned incandescent bulb still remain-after all, the Edisonian light has a special charm, with its flickering filament and golden glow. Cassidy Brush of Brooklyn also seems captivated by the electric light globe. Urban Chandy, her brand of pendants and chandeliers, all feature this enchanting archaic bulb.

Of the many fixtures at Brush's Etsy shop, the latest and greatest may very well be Mosaic Urban Chandy, which was exhibited at Bklyn Designs 2013. A conglomeration of 60 incandescent lamps in all shapes and sizes hanging from a patchwork base made of reclaimed New York pine, Mosaic Urban Chandy revels in its own materials. Each bulb is a feat of engineering in and of itself, and the wood pieces-painted in a colorful palette of gray, white, brown, and red-complement the colors of the incandescent lamps: the silver glass, the white wire, the brown screw base, and the red gleam.

Other chandeliers by Urban Chandy include the 12-light Urban Chic Chandy, available light or dark, with white hardware and a whitewashed wood base or with black hardware and a distressed bourbon-stained wood base. This rectangular piece is perfect above a dining room table. Simple hand-painted porcelain pendants are also available in whatever configuration and color you desire.
