ICFF 2013: Far Rockaway Collection by Grow House Grow
imaginative and colorful designs were on display at last week’s ICFF. Founder and creator, Katie Deedy believes that even wallpaper can tell a beautiful and whimsical story.
Grow House Grow’s latest, the Far Rockaway Collection, pays homage to a time when New Yorkers exchanged their cramped city streets for Queens’ breezy coast.
Grow House Grow hand silk screens all of their wallpaper patterns with care on clay-coated paper. All left over inks from the printing process are salvaged and reused — nothing is wasted or washed down the drains.
That Highly Intelligent Clam
, was inspired by a bout of comical (and somewhat absurd) turn-of-the-century bar banter, and has the feel of scrimshaw-meets-wallpaper.
In the Bathhouse is based on a wayfaring Rockaway monkey found in a 1904 New York Times article. The design hosts playful simians slurping oysters, smoking pipes, and lounging on an afternoon at the shore.
The Tackapousha design features an arrow motif with graceful lines, which aims to bridge the untamed peninsula of 17th century Far Rockaway with the glamor of its high society golden age.
Each of the Far Rockaway Collection’s patterns are available in additional colors. All of Grow House Grow’s wallpaper patterns are also available digitally printed on fabric.
