Milan 2013: Scotch Club by Marset
When the famed Scotch Club opened in Aachen, Germany, more than five decades ago, neither its patrons nor its owner knew that it would be the birthplace of the modern-day discotheque. At this year’s Salone del Mobile, Xavier Mañosa and Mashallah’s latest collaboration for Marset brings that history to the fore.
The lamp pays homage to the Scotch Club, whose owner inadvertently created the modern model of a dance hall by asking a journalist to announce songs as they were played
The designers’ Scotch Club ceramic collection is inspired by the twirling mirrored disco balls of dance clubs around the world. The design is flipped inside-out; 72 reflective faces on the globe’s interior cast complex patterns on surrounding surfaces when illuminated.
The lamps are created using a traditional ceramic-making process in which the shade is fired four times with glazes, specially formulated for Marset, that incorporate fine materials, including gold. Lamps are available in white, blue, terracotta, or black ceramic, with bright white or gold enamel interiors. Three pendant sizes as well as wall and ceiling models are available.
