Not sure if the design was meant to remind us of a riddle, but the 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp by Victor Vetterlein is as close to a play on ideas as a lighting fixture can get. I want to introduce it with a simple question: What is made from recycled wood, bendable aluminum and can be molded into different shapes? Maybe a limited edition Gumby doll, but certainly not something that would illuminate your work space.

A Little Change is Always Good, Even in the Form of the 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp by Victor Vetterlein.

“Composed of a wood stick (made from factory waste) that is weighted at one end, a bendable aluminum rod with a neoprene cover, and an inset low voltage LED lighting strip,” Vetterlein explains the 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp by the New York City-based designer, Victor Vetterlein. “The colored neoprene base comes in the pre-bent ‘support’ ribbon shape, and the purchaser is free to bend the base into their own configurations to personalize the design.”

Using the funky 1×1 Desk Lamp gives you the chance to sport the most fashionable desk lamp while also saving energy. Vetterlein also says it gives you “the opportunity to be co-creator” since the shape of its base is up to you – similar to the way Vetterlein and his team’s mentality on product design from the ground up. They believe that each project should be developed based on “listening, observing and researching” to come up with the most creative and functional concepts.

Beyond its great modular capability and stylish look, the 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp redesigns the idea of LED lighting as a way to have fun with design while thinking about the environment. After reading more into its purpose, the answer to Vetterlein’s latest riddle comes full circle – even though the shape is likely to change.

About the Designer: From day one, Victor Vetterlein was raised to be an engineer or designer. His grandfather a mechanical engineer, his uncle a nautical engineer, and his aunt a realist painter, he got his Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture and a Master’s in Architecture. His first job was an apprenticeship in New York City in architecture that spawned his own studio opening in 2007. The Office of Victor Vetterlein, located in Soho, is where he and his team now have earned a reputation in lighting and other minimalist furnishings like the XY-Quad table, Meeraboo-2007 ST-1 table and the G-Force chair.
