The Yill Portable Powerstation by Studio Aisslinger for Younikos
In all the talk about creating renewable sources of energy, the timeworn—but still timely—driving force behind the electric car seems to have gotten left behind. If you saw the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car, you know the essentials: portable storage of electricity is far more efficient than burning fossil fuels at the source. Manufacturer Younikos and design firm Studio Aisslinger take this notion one step further with Yill. This diminutive movable and re-chargeable power-source packs quite a punch, as it’s able to run a fully-equipped workstation for two to three days.

The Yill Powerstation Liberates us from the Tyranny of the Cord and Socket
Yill requires only four hours plugged into a typical wall socket (or, preferably, a charging station that draws its juice from renewable sources) to fully tap its rechargeable lithium titanium battery. The addition of titanium renders Yill’s battery superior to traditional lithium batteries in several ways: it’s safer; it recharges faster; and it has a significantly longer operating life.
As Younikos reminds us, Yill possesses tremendous potential for improving the workplace landscape: “Fixed wiring is no longer necessary for networks, telephones, or the internet… because Yill stores one kilowatt hour of energy, she makes your workstation’s power source mobile too.”
This obviates the need for the complicated and costly infrastructure endemic to the office. With Yill, the charging station can simply be an off-the-scene phenomena, leaving the workspace sans elevated floors, devoid of unsightly socket banks, absent those miles of unwieldy cordage.
This newfound freedom from such constraints makes the workplace a creature of immeasurable flexibility. As Younikos says, “teams can form quickly and easily where they are needed, even in older buildings or factory lofts.”
Yill also brightens the outlook for increased incorporation of renewables. Given that transport is one of the major hangups with cleaner energy sources like wind or solar, Yill decreases the need to create huge infrastructure to get the power to where its needed. Instead, the power can simply be stored in and easily moved with the eminently portable Yill.

About the Manufacturer: Younikos possesses one over-riding philosophical principle that affects everything they do: “Let the fossils rest in peace.” The credo expresses the firm’s antipathy toward dirty energy, as well as their resolve to work towards a world replete with CO2-free fuel: “that’s why we are developing storage systems and network solutions for safe, stable and cost-efficient electricity supply from regenerative energy sources.”
