Weathered to Perfection: The DOK Sideboard by Reinier de Jong Design

Unlike designs with controlled variables from start to finish, the beauty of the latest DOK sideboard by Reinier de Jong Design is in its ability to embrace the slight differences. They have decided to deliberately use plain steel instead of corten steel in its main material of the sideboard to allow for unique corrosion.

The DOK Sideboard by Reinier de Jong Design does Storage with a Natural Spin on Steel

As Reinier de Jong states about their long, low sideboard, “Atmosphere has left its moist traces on the appearance of DOK sideboard. The drops of a morning dew remain visible in the corrosion of this sideboard.” Intuitively reacting to the natural elements that change a great deal with the seasons, the corrosion process is then finished with a transparent lacquer to prevent future corrosion. The steel is then combined with the front and back slats of plywood to make complete, free-standing units that can be ordered separately at 90 cm W x 60 cm H x 48 cm D.

Simple in construction and undressed in appearance, the DOK sideboard utilizes the intricate, special joinery in the steel case that take its design to a different level. Complete with two types of hinges on the front – a piano hinge and two pivot arms that hold the door open and brake it as it drops – the unit engages with angle bars welded inside that function as reinforcement for the steel plate and act as a rabbet for the fronts.

Along with the red/brown lacquered shade of steel that comes from its individual corrosion, you can choose between brown or white wood-based panel fronts to create a versatile storage system for the bedroom, living room, or even for files in your office. With that, I’d have to agree that this austere design of a sideboard follows the lead of their mission statement, which reads: Reinier de Jong designs for good people. Furniture, interiors, architecture.
