The Photosynthesis Lamp is a new, inventive light fixture that plays off the idea of a “grow light” to bring nature and illumination into a space. The plant and light are integrated with a metal frame in the shape of a lamp shade, which will be filled in by the plant as it grows. Each fixture can be customized depending on the vine type chosen by the owner. By using an energy saving light bulb with the lamp, it promotes eco-friendly principles as well as plant health. The eco-friendly light actually helps the plant to grow faster.

Green Pendant Light

Designer Meirav Barzilay is based in Tel Aviv, where she was born. Barsilay graduated from Holon Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Design in 2008. Her work explores new uses of a variety of materials such as fabric and metal. The juxtaposition of hand-made and mass production is a theme in Barsilay’s work, as seen in the Photosynthesis lamp and the Bloom Vase as examples. Meirav Barzilay has participated in international festivals and exhibitions in Israel and around the world.

The Photosynthesis lamp has a similar aesthetic to Bye Bye Bulb by Daniel Michel. With these fixtures as examples, there seems to be a theme of getting down to the basics of lighting to create more sustainable designs. It is a reenactment of the Modernist movement in architecture, where the structure is exposed and left to create the design statement. The Filament Lamp by Scott, Rich and Victoria, and the Plumen Lamp by Hulger are all exploring the fundamentals of lighting to create more sustainable lighting solutions. The Photosynthesis lamp uses a positive effect of lighting to bring nature inside.
