Delightfully Danish: The Brick Sofa by KiBiSi for Versus
How on earth does design get better than three attractive Danes designing a strong, striking, and architecturally-sound sofa? Perhaps when you combine it with a manufacturer who defines their style with words like: uncompromising aesthetics, sustainable, Kvadrat textiles, and handmade. The Brick Sofa by the KiBiSi trio is the latest collaboration of Danish descent manufactured by Versus, and is the first of it’s brick-inspired breed.

The stacked cushions of the Brick Sofa are nothing short of an optical illusion – seeming as though they may topple over after flopping between the billowing walls – when in fact they are securely fastened together. With the use of fiber concrete buttons (that without seeing them just sound simply sound strong) the physics of this sofa match it’s beauty. In a subtle gray, the attention is given completely to the structure itself and is devoid of kitschy interior design elements that take away from your space.
The design came to the designers who each actually have had their own design firms until this project. The ‘Ki’ stands for Kilo Design by Lars Holme Larsen, the ‘Bi’ represents BIG architects founded by Bjarke Ingels, and the ‘Si’ is from Skibsted Ideation, founded by Biomega creator Jens Martin Skibsted. As you can tell they each bring different design expertise to the table, and together with Versus’ strength in production, the Brick Sofa was born. In fact, along with the three-seater Brick Sofa, they have designed a pouf, chair, a two-seater in the same series.
The design first came to the KiBiSi team when the architect of the group – Ingels – found it difficult to pick out the right sofa for his apartment. As mentioned in the Freshome post the other day “he wanted it to express the architectural lifestyle” that was inspired by the permanent feel of bricks, but with a softened effect that draws you into it. This initial idea then spurred the use of fiber concrete buttons, and voila! The Brick Sofa was born.
“We have been working for more than a year building this collection, and we are very happy and proud of the result,” remarks Versus founders Peter Barreth and Henrik Lerche. “We have succeeded in creating a mix between avant-garde design and more commercial sofas, and we hope the market will embrace our furniture.” I think I speak for us by saying yes, we will indeed.
