Designers Torbjørn Anderssen & Espen Voll in collaboration with manufacturer LK Hjelle and the textile gurus at Innofa have created the Eva Swivel Chair and Ottoman. This attractively unassuming pairing of lounge chair and footrest hides a bevy of innovation beneath its lovely contours and seamless upholstery. Speaking of upholstery (and innovations), Eva is the first chair to weave its ergonomic function into its very fabric-and I don't mean that only in the metaphorical sense. As Anderssen & Voll tell it, "the product joins traditional construction in wood and modern textile technology as the whole outside shape is defined solely by textile."

If you're having trouble visualizing this A & D coup of structural fabric, check out Anderssen & Voll's Eva video; it gives the truth to the claim that the upholstery moves with the chair. Thus, when sitters tilt and swivel, only the fabric moves, leaving the chair "visually rooted in all positions." And speaking of "rooted…," the shape of the chair takes inspiration from natural forms, evoking "the sensation of dwelling at the forest floor amongst mossy rocks, ferns, and tree trunks." In fact, the basic form of Eva is the tree trunk-solid, staid, both stubbornly fixed and fluidly elegant at once. Anderssen & Voll credit their Norwegian roots for the basic conception, as Eva's design pays homage to the Scandinavian tradition of monoblock chairs carved from solid logs.

The whole project bespeaks a synthesis of elemental forms and modern technologies (and there's more to come in the same vein, as Eva represents the first in an entire line of furnishings especially designed for Juvet Landskapshotell in Norway). Advanced press on the Eva Lounge is certainly favorable-the piece has been nominated for the prestigious Designprisen 2010. As one of only six nominees for this annual award in the very design savvy landscape of Norway, Eva is worth experiencing for yourself.
