The Woolly Chair by Jason Miller
The second reincarnation of the shag rug has been revealed by Jason Miller, the creator of the Woolly Chair. Fittingly, the Woolly Chair was released in an exhibition called "It's Not a Joke Anymore" in Istanbul, Turkey in March 2009. Jason is a native New Yorker who has worked for creative minds such as Jeff Koons and Karim Rashid. He started his own design studio in Brooklyn, New York in 2001 and has had a series of solo and group exhibitions since then.

“It's not a Joke Anymore” included three projects, all with references to the 1960’s and 70’s. Jason’s description of the collection is priceless – "As the idealism of the sixties gave way, the "Me" decade was born. The individual usurped the collective and from this rose a populist idea of luxury. In some ways, I think we are entering a similar time." "In the seventies, luxury lost its exclusivity. Comfort, both physical and intellectual, became the defining characteristic. Couches and chairs were big and overstuffed. Entire rooms were terraced and carpeted and became furniture themselves. Macram©, houseplants and fur represented status. Popular culture became art. There is no longer room for platitudes. Populist luxury is back."
The Woolly Chair definitely portrays a sense of luxury and king-like opulence that is more primal than the high end fabrics we typically see today. Similar to a bear or cow rug, the whole hide has been tanned and used as is. The Woolly chair is a chair made almost entirely of animal hair. The hide is bison, an iconic American west animal that the people dominated and almost destroyed. On top of a series of gold legs is the chair's structure, which is industrial wool felt that has been folded and sewn, leaving the back and arms flexible. It's is a comfortable and decadent chair.
