Magnet Me
If I didn’t know better, I’d say UK-based Magnet is the millennial incarnation of Andy Warhol. And they seem to think so too, given the unmistakable reference to the pop cultural icon on the home page of their web site. But this is no reproduction of a multi-tinted Marilyn Monroe, but rather the visage of yours truly (or whomever your “yours truly” happens to be). In truth, I’m not convinced that kitchen cabinets are the best locale for either a self-portrait or a blown-up 2 x 4 foot photo reproduction of the home’s denizens (not to mention the children residing therein). I am certain, however, that the technology enabling a virtually infinite variety of exquisitely customized cabinet facings is universally welcome. Except, perhaps, if you’re a libra like I am. Because with that many options I would definitely spiral into a vortex of decision paralysis. Better for me to stick with wood.

For the eleven other astrological signs, however, Magnet offers a tantalizing choice between their house supply of decorative and imaginative facings–which include a large selection of stock photos–and any image that you choose (or choose to create) on your own. So just as with Difasa’s Quadrum Wall Panels, you can devise finishing touches using anything from a microscopic snapshot of the minutiae of flora, to a wide-angle skyscape of cities from NYC to Abu Dabai. In contrast to Difasa, however–which mostly does closet doors and room dividers–Magnet offers a comprehensive kitchen design that incorporates your chosen image.
And if the design process seems daunting, have a look at Magnet’s virtual design tool. The feature lets you sample different paint colors, different countertops, different cabinet materials, and of course the huge variety of images for facings. The transfer from computer image to custom-sized cabinet front is accomplished via laser technology–in Italy, no less. The process “ensures that the images are scratch-resistant and durable… MagnetMe units come with a 15 year cabinet and 1-year frontal guarantee, PLUS all personalized MagnetMe cabinets come with a plain replacement door frontal in case you ever want to de-personalize the kitchen.” That last option is crucial, since, no matter how much you may love your kids or your self-image a la Warhol, I guarantee that, once it comes time to sell, prospective buyers do not share your enthusiasm.
