At BKLYN Designs: Bella Lamp by ALS Designs Highlights Healthy Furniture
We are surrounded by toxins–especially in our homes. Building materials and furniture include glues, phthalates, and other chemicals that may contribute to declines in healthy living. And yet, most consumers and designers don’t consider the toxicity of materials until some major problem comes up like tainted toys in China or some other such catastrophe (melamine dog and cat food scare, for example). But awareness is building, and one of its proponents is Brooklyn-based furniture company ALS Designs.
Bella Lamp. Designed by ALS Designs.
Founded by Andrea Summerton, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), ALS Designs believes in “providing ‘healthy’ furniture.” She’s not just talking about sustainable materials, though that too is important to her designs. She’s talking about “safe, non-toxic materials.” ALS explains: “Many consumers are unaware of the cost a piece of furniture can have on their health.” But you can rest easy when you choose a piece by ALS Designs.
Their Bella Lamp, for example, which was recently featured on orGLAMic.com, the site for sustainable luxury living, uses bamboo and tung oil–100% natural, formaldehyde-free, and zero-VOC. The floor lamp, measuring 57.25″ h x 21″ w x 21″ d, is composed of a trio of tapered legs of such exquisiteness and exactitude they remind me of a trigonometric compass. Topped by a drum lamp shade, Bella Lamp offers a perfect balance of straight and round lines. The effect is singularly elegant. The kraft paper shade works in conjunction with the bamboo wood to create a harmonious study in warm tones. A 3-way brass lamp socket allows you to increase or dim the light depending on your room’s illumination needs. With Bella Lamp by ALS Designs, you can brighten your outlook–and your health.
