Kevin Krumnikl’s Office

If you took a quick glance and though saw a cow head…well, you did. And as you read on, the rest of its body will be visible. Designer Kevin Krumnikl set out to create a desk that would stand out from others. Let it suffice to say, he succeeded. His newest piece, Office, evolved from an early sketch that somehow reminded him of a cow. In an effort to keep it subtle, he continued to work at this idea through the addition of key animal features.

Office. Designed by Kevin Krumnikl.

If you’re familiar with the streamlined nature his work and its lack of frivolity, it should come as no surprise that each animal feature was designed to fulfill specific function. The head grew into a drawer, the ears a defined “bin” for paperwork. The chair, which neatly fits into an indentation in the desk’s “belly”, conjures images of cow milking (for better or worse). “The basis of each piece is a clean and simple form which evolves from a precise idea. By bringing together design, craftsmanship and art, products are made that are individual as well as sophisticated. The products can be tailored to meet any demand, not only as far as form and function are concerned, but also size and material used.”

Krumnikl first came to our attention with their innovative coffee table, aptly named “Library“. The design incorporates the concept of a bookshelf – containing magazines and prized literature – in the non-traditional form of a low table. Inserted horizontally, book and magazine covers are integrated into the table’s surface, thus becoming celebrated and visible components of the piece. I’ll admit, I’m more fond of Library than the newer “Office” product, but still appreciate the out-of-the-box aesthetic.

Krumnikl Environment, established in 2008, creates hand-crafted products in an environmentally-friendly way. Built by a local master cabinet maker, each production step can be traced and modified up to its completion. Office incorporates (somewhat) subtle humor to put a smile on your face throughout the work day – or afterhours at home.
