Eneloop Lamp by Sanyo

Since inventing the Eneloop Battery—reusable, rechargeable, and recyclable—Sanyo decided to develop an entire line of products in its “Eneloop Universe, a product series emphasizing a lifestyle valuing reusing resources.” The idea behind Eneloop should come as no surprise, given Sanyo’s environmental efforts in recent years, not the least of which is the gargantuan Solar Ark, the company’s solar photovoltaic power generation facility in Japan. You may not be able to take home the coveted Solar Ark, but you can own a little piece of “looping energy” with the convenient Eneloop Lamp, which doubles as a lamp and flashlight.

The genie-shaped light has “no metallic contact on the product body,” making it sleek and smooth. Instead, the elongated bulb gets charged on a simple, round base. In its standing position, Eneloop Lamp is a white table lamp with two settings, Clear (high) and Fade (low) Modes. Unlike other interior lights, Eneloop Lamp has a Healing Light, a soothing blue light that can operate continuously or in a flickering mode. But the truly unique feature is the built-in flashlight: “When the lamp unit is tilted by 90 degrees or more, a built-in acceleration sensor senses it and the flashlight automatically turns on, making it possible to quickly obtain a light source in an emergency situation like a midnight earthquake.” Besides catastrophes of that magnitude, Eneloop Lamp can be used as a flashlight for minor debacles like short-term power outages.

Of course, Eneloop Lamp uses Eneloop Batteries, which is the point of departure for the entire Eneloop Universe of products. This is another great feature, especially for those of us who live in really cold climates, because the Eneloop Batteries perform well in low temperature. Sanyo plugs (pun intended) Eneloop succinctly: “Change your batteries, Change your future.” And their line of stylish, innovative products encourages the shift to Eneloop technology: besides Eneloop Lamp, recent additions include a neck warmer, a portable solar power generator, and an “electric” blanket.
