Iron/Occasions Island Sink by Kohler Revolutionizes Enamel

Introduced at the 2009 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show, the Iron/Occasions Island Sink by Kohler is a sink, island, and design statement all at once. The “one-piece surface and integrated basin” uses the incredibly strong Kohler cast iron, covered in a thick layer of enamel. The material is super sturdy—and that doesn’t even cover how good it looks. Besides the enamel’s durability, the Iron/Occasions Island Sink is sustainable: it’s made of 93% recycled and reclaimed material.

Guaranteed not to chip, crack or burn, the enamel-covered cast iron is also amazingly easy to clean. While the sink’s material is remarkable due to its inherent qualities, it pales in comparison to the overall appearance and interest of the design. A sleek island sink with an “integrated top and bowl” gives a “sophisticate twist” to the Kohler collection. Its 30 x 63 inch size makes the island generous—large enough to command attention. The trough sink centered along the entire length of the island is eight inches wide, with a center depth of four inches. The product is indeed “a durable yet sophisticated twist on the use of Kohler cast iron.”

The best feature of the Iron/Occasions Island Sink is that it feels like a custom piece. A workstation and storage unit as much as a sleek island, this piece proves Kohler’s excellence and innovative thinking. Paired with a subway tile backsplash in crisp white or with glass mosaic tile in celadon, the Iron/Occasions Island Sink transforms any kitchen into a showcase. At home with hexagonal floor tile or wide plank bamboo, this island sink by Kohler pairs well with traditional or industrial kitchen design. In steel grey, the enamel reminds me of UFO ships gleaming in a starry night.
