Boontje’s Bejeweled Boxes for Bisazza
Something we saw in many applications at NeoCon09 was the use of pixilated design. With new technologies and a concomitant emphasis on “computerization,” designers in every field are incorporating the most nano of graphic elements, the pixel. When you’re looking for high resolution and what you get are fuzzy pixels, you tend to be unhappy. But the unintended beauty of that pixilation can be harnessed. Such is the case with Tord Boontje’s new products designed for Italian mosaic giant Bisazza.

Must I mention that Boontje hails from the Netherlands? Probably not. I would stop going on and on about Dutch design if that country would stop birthing such fantastic, creative minds. Despite my unintentional, helpless penchant for the Northern European flair, Boontje’s pixilated pieces are gorgeous. His pair of commodes, Summer Trees and Night Vision, look like jeweled boxes. They open to reveal convenient shelving; when closed, they are covered in mosaic tile all the way around, making them double as shimmering room dividers. The emerald and chartreuse greens of Summer Trees are softened by white striations that evoke movement, as if the leaves are being troubled by a breeze. The blacks, grays, and whites of Night Vision effect a moody view of flowers. From another perspective, the floral motif resembles a starry sky, a galactic body we’ve yet to discover. In both cases, Boontje’s artistic philosophy comes through: “All projects and installations designed by Tord Boontje are inspired by the observation of nature. The concealed, almost invisible, usage of technologies is a distinctive characteristic of his creative approach, aimed at enhancing the poetic essence of his works and enticing the observer’s imagination and emotions.”

A third Boontje piece showcases Bisazza’s vibrant mosaics: the Dark Waters Table creates an abstract pattern of rippling currents using sapphire, aquamarine, and opal pieces. If you want to see the sparkling tile bijoux, visit Bisazza’s new flagship store in Chicago, just opened in mid-June 2009, which “has been conceived as a series of different living environments recalling the atmosphere of a sumptuous home.” The company also has locations in Los Angeles and New York, for those entrenched at the coasts.
