Ghisa Bench: Infinite Options for the Outdoors
The days are getting longer and the temperature is rising. Soon we'll be spending more and more time outdoors, enjoying fresh air and sunshine. Hence there is no better time than now to starting thinking about outdoor seating. The Ghisa Collection, a flexible modular seating system designed by Riccardo Blumer with Matteo Borghi for Alias Design, affords an infinite number of possibilities for gathering together outdoors.

This modular-based bench can be conformed as desired: short or long, linear or curvaceous. In your own backyard or throughout a public park or waterfront, Ghisa is an indisputable replacement for the classic wooden bench. Clean and modern, strong and weather-proof with an infinite number of seating possibilities... Ghisa defines what effective and beautiful modular design was intended to be. In contrast to many of the benches out there that absorb moisture or allow rainfall to collect on the bench surface, Ghisa offers a welcome alternative that remains completely dry.
The basic modules, with their ergonomically designed profiles, are made from lamellar cast iron lacquered for outdoor use and locked together with separate connecting elements, made of stove enameled steel. Each module is composed of eleven linear human-like ribs, with progressively varying widths which rest on the structural profile to define the seat and back. The materiality of Ghisa (definition: cast iron) suggests an association with girder brides and tower structures from the beginnings of the industrial revolution, while introducing the material in a highly contemporary language.
Two module types of the Ghisa Collection are available (either “inner” or “end” elements) which produces distinct but equally attractive creations. A linear composition results from alternating the modules whereas a curvaceous one evolves by situating the modules side by side. While only two elements are available, the possibilities are indeed endless. Whether you choose to build a snaking configuration, a circular arrangement, a straight bench or single chair, Ghisa can adapt to nearly any situation. Its skeletal structure, both light and playful, will provide your outdoor environment with a beautiful combination of form and function at their best. Attesting to Ghisa’s international and versatile appeal, the modular seating system was exhibited at the IMM Cologne Design Festival in Germany and previously at Milan Design Week 2008.
