The Sqoosh
The unflappably named Sqoosh demonstrates the designer's unstinting love for meshing eclectic designs with contemporary outlook. At first the bench looks innocuous enough, but manufacturer CREATIVEANS craftily makes a statement, which lays emphasis on a sense of self and the sanctity of personal space.
Sqoosh. Designed by Kimming Yap of CREATIVEANS.
Sqoosh has been "inspired by the tension between 2 opposing forces and the dissonance that results when they meet." It’s interesting to note that CREATIVEANS is based in South East Asia where personal space is still a non-concept and a hive existence a common phenomena (I would know). Hence calling the Sqoosh an offshoot of a recent trend, which is penetrating the young consciousness won't be a hyperbole on my part.
Sqoosh is ideal for waiting lounges and public spaces where encroachment of personal space is most unsolicited. The ripples act as a physical and psychological barrier as well as highlight the congruent interplay of two dynamic opposites. They also serve a functional purpose as one can use it as a magazine rack! Ingenuity at its best, don't you think?
The electric blue bench measures 2000 mm L x 400 mm W x 560 mm H and brings that much desired hint of informality to a waiting area. Some may find Sqoosh idiosyncratic, but it does aspire to be different without being audacious.
It's laudable that the Sqoosh isn't just a theoretical ideation and through innovative use of material integrates seating with a thought process. Its design is in tandem with CREATIVEANS vision of "creating iconic designs" and effectively gives the occupants of space privacy yet access.
