Levitation Desk

The Levitation Desk by designer Alexandre Boucher transcends craftsmanship to the next level and astoundingly makes it look quite effortless. There is no shamanism or magic involved in achieving this breakthrough design, and while Boucher wont spill the beans, we put it down to good old physics. Or maybe even something magnetic?

The Levitation Desk challenges all the fundamental design principles and gives an illusion of a higher being as it appears to be suspended in mid-air. Opting for just one table leg instead of four is quite unheard of and also exemplifies Boucher's affinity for minimalism. For the designer, the real challenge was to use an idiosyncratic leg, which could be placed anywhere without it toppling over to accommodate existing structures.

Personally I feel that an air of fragility encompasses the table and highlights the convergence of abstract influences, as Boucher doesn't conform to any conventional design norms. It manages to achieve an eternal aura that is not overpowering and is more than just an ethereal design concept. In fact, Boucher is currently in the process of roping in a manufacturer to execute his vision and hopes to showcase it at the Paris design show in 2009.

Understated, yet remarkable, the Levitation Desk is a striking synthesis of art, design, and engineering innovation. It also intertwines the emotions of mysticism with sustainable design quite adeptly, and journeys you through the realm of vision and imagination.
