Zupanc’s Lolita for Moooi Will Keep You in Suspense

The Lolita Suspension Lamp is mysterious. At first, Lolita seems transparent-clearly feminine, thanks especially to its "dainty polka dot edge." But, like Nabokov's title character, the Lolita lamp shifts the longer you look. It's the literary equivalent of Emily Dickinson meets Alice in Wonderland. With one glance, Lolita is a thimble. Look again, and Lolita is a hat. Designer Nika Zupanc does well in explaining the paradoxical appeal of her lamp: "Who is afraid of pink?

Lolita. Designed by Nika Zupanc for Moooi.

My imagination chases female archetypes intentionally. Frivolous, even naive objects are my favorite victims. And when, during such a process, I manage to be creative in an evidently reserved way, I then touch the purest meaning of my work and frivolity becomes timeless elegance."

The Lolita Suspension Lamp has a polyurethane base with an injection-molded ABS shade. At 40 x 37 cm, Lolita remains demure, but not too subtle. Besides pink, Lolita comes with a white, black, or gray-all with a white interior that provides a warm glow. Moooi is the name behind this female designer and her female light, an excellent partner for Zupanc's vision of breaking "your everyday routine." Lolita is like a frilly bell jar, a skirt caught in the wind, a ballerina's tutu. But take the lamp in and the shape gets elevated to something else: a sand dune, a jellyfish, or a ten gallon hat. There is something not quite revealed at first glance, making us remember that appearances can be deceiving. Lolita-the lamp and the vamp-is more complicated than she seems.
