Salone 2025: A Noble Fiber

It’s no wonder that “Ancient Memories,” the new textile collection from Marcel Wanders and Fishbacher 1819, has been photographed in sepia tones.

The eight new textiles that debuted during Milan Design Week (at satellite show Fuorisalone) are tailored to bridge the divide between past and future, to convey a sense of how history affects the present moment.

It’s an approach aimed at making an heirloom object that bridges time, that evokes nostalgia while simultaneously offering technological insight.

Given that the fabrics look like they could have been made in 1819, that last statement might seem confusing, but each of the eight new designs feature hemp, “an ancient and noble fiber, chosen for its durability.”

Hemp is not only durable and beautiful, it’s also sustainable, and certainly relevant to any discussion of climate solutions. Wanders and Fishbacher 1819 Creative Director (Camilla D. Fishbacher) point out that the fabric is integrally linked to nature: “When its cycle is complete, it returns to the earth without leaving a trace.”

Each of the eight new textiles is evocative and soothing—design objects that offer a subtle transparency, that softly sway with each wisp of wind. Inviting deep immersion into the senses, the textiles’ innate tactility offers a potent counterpoint to the digital barrage of the current moment, reminding us that some things transcend the exigencies of instantaneous fulfillment, that some things actually last.

“The fabrics do more than adorn spaces: they envelop the soul, and evoke an era when everything was simpler, more authentic, and slower.”

The very hectic Salone del Mobile ended on April 13. Now that time has slowed, take a moment to reflect on all the product that endures, including Ancient Memories. Find out more about this “Archeology of Fabrics” at Fishbacher 1819.
