Traditional office settings are set up for long-term use. However, jobs come in many different forms. Mobile workers come in to a new work area, and have an average of 8 minutes to set up before they can become engaged in their work again. Steelcase used their research to create SOTO II.

The SOTO II (short for State Of The Office) is designed to meet the needs of workers that have to move from place to place. Interruptions to a workflow means time lost due to transitioning from location to location.

SOTO II is a joint research project with R&D consultancy IDEO, and Details, which is the same Steelcase company that designed the dash light. James Beukema is a Sr. Industrial Designer on the Steelcase design team. He says, “Everyone is mobile – just in varying degrees. In our research, we observed mobile workers all across the country, photographing what they did, where they went, and what they carried. From this research we identified the need to help mobile workers transition into new spaces and to provide them with a place to work that welcomes them and anticipates their needs.”

Items in the collection help satisfy the needs of a mobile worker, who needs immediate and quick access to power, connectivity, and personal items. The Mobile Caddy is designed to store your work bag and personal belongings. If you need a desktop area to hold mobile devices or other items, the Launch Pad comes in powered and non-powered versions. There is also an option of a Launch Pad Divider Screen, so the user can separate the space for privacy reasons.

The Functional Screen holds important documents, books, and papers. Another place to store frequently used items such as paperwork and files is the Personal Pocket, which can be used free standing or in multiples for storage as a desktop organizer.

The handy Cable Clip keeps your wires in place, so they don’t fall or get tangled in a cluttered mess. The Personal Hook attaches to the edge of your work surface for a simple solution for any items that need a place to hang up off the floor, such as sweaters, lightweight purses, and keys.
