If I'm going to be honest, I'll admit I don't get too excited about LED lighting anymore-unless you use the technology to influence the design. Which is exactly what lighting designers Nicoletta Rossi and Guido Bianchi have done for Flos with Ipnos. By reducing the elements of a traditional lantern, the design duo was able to leave only a postmodern ghost, "a simple metal box supporting invisible light sources."

LED Technology Enables Designers to Create Ghost Lamp

A celebration of negative space, Ipnos has distilled its allusive antecedent into "a void." Of course, this void invites the eyes to fill in the hollow cuboid. Ipnos is two things at once: a light and the phantom of a light. Designers Rossi and Bianchi explain that they sought to use innovative LED technology "in the most understated manner, almost mysteriously."

Constructed of extruded and anodized aluminum profiles, Ipnos weighs only two pounds. The LED lights are integrated into the upper edge of Ipnos' skeleton. Available in anodized natural, black, and copper finishing, Ipnos can be dimmed or brightened using the switch on the power cord. The lamp also converts into a light table by inserting a transparent methacrylate surface into the top square space.
