Knotty Nautical: SerpentSea Rugs by Sophie Aschauer
If you’ve ever taken a rope-tying class, then you know all about the many complex and fascinating knots in existence. For centuries, sailors have been crafting their knots, perhaps not unaware of the beauty in their sinuous shapes and labyrinthine forms. Modern-day upcycle artist Sophie Aschauer is giving historical nautical knots their due in her SerpentSea rugs.

Maritime Rugs from Recycled Marine Rope
Using four different knots named after famous 17th-century pirates, Aschauer creates round, oval, and rectangular area rugs from recycled marine rope. Killigrew is a circular mat featuring a complex weave—it somewhat resembles a Celtic medallion. In colors like red-white-and-blue, it has a traditional nautical feel. In unexpectedly bold turquoise, Killigrew transcends its oceanic mood.
At 16 x 29.5 inches, Morgan is the only rectangular area rug, albeit with rounded edges. A less complex weave, Morgan shows off the beauty and wear of the reused rope. From solid mats in blue or green to dualistic creations that juxtapose black and white or purple and orange, this mat turns any floor into a maritime dream.
