Carpet Patterns Envisioned by Artists and Architects

From the architectural firm known as Coop Himmelb(l)au, which was founded in Vienna by Wolf D. Prix and Helmut Swiczinsky in 1968, comes a carpet that “reflects a respective city’s suspense, variety, vivacity and complexity in a single building as art of the future.” An expressionistic design of linear forms that resemble I beams or trusses, the Coop Himmelb(l)au Art Collection carpet is dynamic—the eye will follow any of the lines and lend the floor a sense of motion.

Famed painter David Hockney lends his bright cool colors to an abstract design resembling water. Like his representations of swimming pools in Los Angeles, Hockney’s carpet depicts the shimmer of waves and the ripples of water. Another abstract design comes from world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, whose carpet for Vorwerk seems to represent the meeting of the natural and constructed worlds.
