Bent and Twisted Wood Shape the Flock Collection Through Tom Raffield’s Youthful Years Spent in the Woods.

His wild forested lifestyle growing up has shaped the designer’s rugged ability to be flexible. Almost like a personal metaphor that describes his design style of flexible wood, his brand new lighting collection entitled, Flock, reflects just that. He offers not only a Flock light to quench our desire for eco-friendly illumination, he offers four: the Flock Floor Lamp, Ceiling Lamp, Table Lamp and Wall Lamp. Made from sustainably-sourced Sycamore wood that has been steam bent to waving wood perfection, the right effect has been achieved with lots of practice.

Varying from one lamp and light to the next, he uses an adaptable UK/EU plug and E27 ES bulbholders (or E26 in the ceiling lamp case) that are to be used with low energy bulbs (at a max of 20 Watts). The Ceiling Light was the winner of the Lighting Design Award 2011 due to its use of 90 individually steam-bent and twisted strips of Sycamore wood in combination with laser-cut Birch ply and solid steel for strength. Said to represent “movement and elegance, originally designed to represent the fluidity of flocking birds”, it is no wonder he comes from a place of gratitude for the beauty of pure nature.
