Hana-Arashi: Sakura Petals Dancing in the Wind
Hana-Arashi by nendo for Paola Lenti is all kinds of poetic.
The Japanese term describes “delicate Sakura petals dancing in the wind,” explains Paola Lenti. Nendo’s collection for the Italian outdoor furniture brand also encapsulates the beauty of repurposing materials. The second installment of Mottainai—Paola Lenti’s project inspired by “the Japanese philosophy of ‘waste not, use what you have'”—Hana-Arashi takes advantage of production remnants.
“I was pleasantly surprised to find the concept of Mottainai embraced by an Italian company—it immediately felt familiar, like home. In this project, Paola and I achieved a harmonious balance of spirituality, materiality, and sustainability, almost like composing a haiku,” states Oki Sato, founder of nendo studio.
In case that’s not enough elegiac splendor, nendo also drew inspiration from Samurai armor. All the pieces in the collection, including the dramatic Hana-Arashi Armchair and playful Hana-Arashi Pouf, display skillful folding and shaping techniques.
Paola Lenti showed the collection at their Miami flagship store in an experiential exhibit featuring suspended pieces of Maris fabric, which is made from 100% polyolefin. Maris is waterproof and comes in 180 colors.
