Cray Bauxmont-Flynn
A tribal citizen of the Cherokee Nation and the Delaware Tribe of Indians, Clay Bauxmont-Flynn is an architect, designer, and podcaster who integrates Native American culture and art into his design practice.
After studying at the Institute of Design in Rome and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Bauxmont-Flynn earned a master’s in business administration from Columbia University. He worked as an architect at Tulsa-based EDG before launching Amatoya in 2019. Amatoya means “rainmaker” in Cherokee.
According to Amatoya, Bauxmont-Flynn’s oeuvre combines Native American heritage with contemporary design: “Through his work, Cray ensures that his heritage remains a living, breathing force in modern design, crafting environments that embody both exceptional aesthetics and deep cultural significance.”
Amatoya collaborates with Native American tribes and Indigenous communities around the world, integrating handmade art and techniques into custom furniture and interior design projects.
Kamama Chair
The Kamama Chair was one of the first products Bauxmont-Flynn created for Amatoya. He describes it as “a piece that looks both soft and graceful, yet strong and dynamic.”
Uweyv Sectional Sofa
A voluptuous and sinewy wonder, the Uweyv Sectional Sofa exudes luxury.
Council Chair
A more recent piece, the Council Chair pays homage to Cherokee leadership. Inspired by Cherokee council houses where tribal leaders gather to make decisions, Council Chair is hand-carved from wood. Its upholstery is comfortable and large, providing “a space for contemplation, support, and wisdom.”
Adanvdo “Spirit” Tables
Already a popular item, the Adanvdo “Spirit” Tables take full advantage of the beauty of negative space. The slits between wood rings creates a sense of harmony that feels geometric and musical all at once.
Echo of the Circle
Another notable piece is Otakv-Estofis, meaning Echo of the Circle. The lines and curves symbolize “unity, continuity, and the interconnectedness of life,” while the dark wood represents strength.
Interior Design
Bauxmont-Flynn works on hospitality, gaming, commercial, and residential interiors, combining pieces produced by Amatoya alongside custom furniture.
