BDNY 2024: Moments of Wander for HBF Textiles
Designer Christiane Müller is a colorist and an expert in woven textiles. Her latest collection “Moments of Wander” for HBF Textiles, which was on display at BDNY 2024, explores the intersection of nature and textile design.
Through her eyes we zoom in and out to see nature’s stunning beauty in landscapes, earthly materials, and fleeting moments of wonder.
Müller created a trio of textiles for Moments of Wander: panoramas in Fields of Velvet, landscapes in Trails of Tweed, and a celebration of the biodiversity of meadows in Seeds of Colour.
Each one invites us to stop and admire beauty while humbly reminding us of nature’s magnitude, fragility, and universal language.
Fields of Velvet
Fields of Velvet is woven velvet with a loop and cut pile.
Five colorways capture the peacefulness of being outdoors, like looking up into a canopy of trees or walking barefoot through soft moss on the forest floor.
There’s randomness in these patterns. Rather than repetition, there’s new details each time you look.
Trails of Tweed
Trails of Tweed mimics the myriad of colors found within Müller’s wanderings. The irregular thickness gives this textile a crafted, handloom feel.
The structured, matte fabric shows off various shades of oxidized stones, rocks, and pebbles she encountered while visiting the volcanic mountains of Lanzarote, the deserts of Maroc and Mali, and the canyons of the national parks in America.
Seeds of Colour
Seeds of Colour borrows from nature’s very own color palette.
The pattern’s 13 colorways and micro-check use shades inspired by flowers, grasses, trees, and herbs. The individual names themselves—Seeds of Sunflower, Jasmine, Dahlia, and Primrose—are inspired by Piet Oudolf, a design and garden architect whom Müller admires.
All of these indoor/outdoor textiles retain indoor woven qualities while being able to withstand the elements of life lived outdoors.
Moments of Wander is Müller’s fourth textile collaboration with HBF Textiles.
